Protect Your Property and Use Propane with Confidence
Propane is a safe and efficient energy source, but like with any fuel, it should be handled with care. Utilize this propane safety information to learn more about the best ways to handle propane, what to do in the event of an emergency, and more.
What Does Propane Gas Smell Like?
Propane gas is naturally odorless, but an odorant is added to make detecting a leak easier. The odorant is described to smell like sulfur, skunk spray, or rotten eggs.
What Should I Do If I Smell Gas?
If you smell gas in your home or business, follow these steps:
NO FLAMES OR SPARKS. Immediately put out all smoking materials and other open flames. Do not operate lights, appliances, telephones, or cell phones. Flames or sparks from these sources can trigger an explosion or a fire.
LEAVE THE AREA IMMEDIATELY. Get everyone out of the building or area where you suspect gas is leaking.
SHUT OFF THE GAS. Turn off the main gas supply valve on your propane tank if it is safe to do so. To close the valve, turn it to the right (clockwise).
REPORT THE LEAK. From another nearby building away from the gas leak, call Ideal Gas right away. If you can’t reach us, call 911 or your local fire department.
DO NOT RETURN TO THE BUILDING OR AREA until Ideal Gas, an emergency responder, or a qualified service technician determines that it is safe to do so.
GET YOUR SYSTEM CHECKED. Before you attempt to use any of your propane appliances, Ideal Gas or a qualified service technician must check your entire system to ensure that it is leak-free.
Why Is a Propane Leak Dangerous?
Propane is a safe and reliable fuel when stored and used correctly, but a leak can create danger if not handled right away. Because propane is highly flammable, leaking gas can build up in the air and ignite if met with a spark, open flame, or even certain electrical switches.
A leak can also prevent your equipment from burning fuel properly, potentially producing carbon monoxide, which can be extremely harmful at high levels. This is why it’s so important to leave an area if you suspect a gas leak.
With proper maintenance, safe handling, and prompt response to any unusual smells or signs, propane remains one of the safest and most dependable energy sources available.
Is Propane Safe for Heating?
Yes. Propane is a very safe heating fuel when installed, used, and maintained correctly. Modern propane systems are built with many safety features, and the fuel itself is highly regulated from storage to delivery. Propane is non-toxic and burns cleaner than many other fuel options.
